Shared living is in demand

Our survey findings show that the appetite for shared housing is strong.

77% of those not currently in a shared house said they would consider it in the future.

Among those who do currently live in a shared house, 39% said they have no plans to move out.

This shift highlights that shared housing is not just a short-term option. For many tenants, it is becoming a longer-term lifestyle choice.

Changing the narrative

The idea that shared homes are unmanageable or unpredictable does not reflect the reality for most people.

Nearly half of surveyed tenants described shared housing as a sociable way to live. Shared homes offer the chance to meet people, share everyday moments and avoid the isolation that can come with living alone. For many, that interaction and sense of connection plays a genuine role in supporting mental health.

What tenants are really concerned about

Concerns about shared living often focus on safety, chaos or noise. The data, however, tells a different story.

Fewer than 1 in 10 tenants said safety was a concern.

Only 9% said noise was a strong deterrent.

These results suggest that the biggest barriers are often overstated. When shared homes are well managed, most tenants see them as a positive and practical way to live.

A shift in mindset

The findings point to a shift in mindset about what shared living means. For many, it is not simply about affordability. It is about homes that fit the way people want to live today.

That creates a clear opportunity for property managers and landlords: to provide homes that prioritise comfort, connection and stability, and meet the growing demand for long-term shared living.
